Back in November 2019, I headed over to Barnes and Nobel in order to sit in their cafe and get some writing done. Normally, I find a spot in the back and hide from the world so I don’t have any distractions. On this day, however, there was a man sitting at one of the front tables. His head was bent over his laptop and he was furiously working on something. I usually wouldn’t pay attention to anyone else who happens to be there. I just go to write and drink tea. But there was something about this man.
As I walked past him, my feet shuffled and my head turned towards him. I’m not ashamed to say that I was pretty taken by his profile. I enjoyed the eye candy at the moment and walked to the back of the cafe but as I was getting ready to set everything down, my feet decided they were going to take over and I ended up sitting at a table directly behind him. One may call this fate or serendipity or sheer dumb luck but as I took off my jacket I had a story flash through my head. So I did what any red-blooded woman would do and took a picture of him to share with my girlfriends.
My conversation with them was fairly short but it included this “affair” that I’d had in my head prior to messaging them. They were super supportive of my decision to leave the relationship and kept going on how strong I was. That was my first 5-minute affair. The next day I went back to the same cafe and saw someone new. I took a picture and sent it to my girlfriends along with the short affair that popped into my head when I saw this man. And thus, 5 Minute Affairs was born.
The goal is to collect enough affairs (I’d like to see 100) to publish a coffee table book. That is pretty far away, especially because I’m not the type of person who just goes around taking random pictures of people (normally). Sometimes I can go a couple of weeks without having one.
But what is an affair, I hear you ask. You know when you’re out and about doing your thing and you just start people watching. Most of the time you imagine what their life is like – the good and the bad and then you move on about your day. That’s an affair for me. It literally happens in the span of 5-minutes. I see someone and have that flash of an affair, take their picture, edit it so it’s not easily recognizable, and write it up. After I’ve got it all together, I’ll post it here on the blog and them upload them to my Instagram and Twitter accounts.
In between affairs I hope to post a few things that I think might be fun and reflective of the affairs I have so that I don’t lack content for you. I’d like for you to keep coming back! I’m also setting up a shop so that you can help support me by purchasing some merchandise with my fancy logo on it.
Thanks so much for hanging out with me and I hope to see you soon!
